Stud describes a masculine-presenting lesbian, a term that comes from Black lesbian communities, mostly in the United States. Stud is not butch with a different label
The two describe masculine presentation but they come from different places and carry different histories. Treating them as interchangeable erases where stud came from.
The term belongs to a community
It came out of Black lesbian culture in the United States and spread from there. If it is yours, it is yours. If it is not, knowing what it means is the useful part.
Stud for stud is a real search
As is stud and femme. Mainstream apps handle neither well, mostly because they assume every pairing needs a contrast.

What does stud mean?

Short for aggressive. It comes from the same communities as stud and is used in a similar way, describing masculine presentation in a Black lesbian context.
Can anyone use the word stud?
It belongs to the community it came from. Plenty of people outside it use it loosely, which is exactly why the distinction is worth making rather than glossing over.
